12V 314AH BT Batteries Max Amp Setting

  I have two 12V 314AH BT Batteries being charged by a 40 amp battery charger and a 80 amp alternator. Can I set the max amp charge setting to 40 amps on the batteries and protect the alternator without having to install a DC to DC converter?
